The field of our research:

The research studies conducted in the Department focus on information science. They explore diverse aspects of effective access to information and knowledge in the context of social, organizational, and individual information needs as well as in the context of practices in use of knowledge and information.

The main themes of our research are information systems and services, their functioning and application in informational practice in science, humanities, business, education, culture, and other domains of social life. We analyze and evaluate: information systems and services; processes of representation, organization, retrieval, and visualization of information and knowledge. We also analyze design and optimization of the tools applied in these processes. We study information needs and use of information as well as factors that determine that determine these processes.

Applying the bibliometrics, scientometrics, webometrics, and altmetrics methods we study the information itself, its properties, resources and information flow.

Particularly, we specialize in knowledge organization (KO) and use of semantic technologies in KO; information architecture and information management in the context of information services dedicated to diverse groups of users.

The research themes are also related to social, cultural, legal, and ethical aspects of digitization and use of ICT; digital quantifying of social life; information services for digital humanities; issues related to change of information society; public and European information; information literacy, and information ecology.

The Department of Information Studies publishes bi-annual scientific journal “ZIN – Information Studies” and the series “Miscellanea Informatologica Varsoviensia”.

Every two years, the Department in co-operation with ISKO Poland organizes an international conference “Information Science in the Age of Change”.

The Department of Information Studies staff provides several courses on BA programs “Information Architecture” and “Librarianship and Information Studies” as well as on MA program “Information and Knowledge Architecture”.

What is the field of our research?

Katedra Technologii Informacyjnych Mediów [Department of Information Technology of Media], deals with the research area defined by the latest technologies that have been used in the media. In the Department of Information Technology of the Media, we created original interdisciplinary study programs - Logistics and media administration (specialization: Information Technology of Media as well as Logistics and Marketing). They integrate elements of information technology, economics, marketing, and management as well as related fields, allowing free use of electronic media.
The programs are carried out at the first and second cycle, currently attended by 600 students. At the same time, recruitment for post-graduate studies is in progress and the graduate program is being prepared.
Graduates of Media Logistics easily find themselves in managerial positions that require creative action in dynamically changing technological and organizational surroundings.
Traditionally, the annual conferences are organized by the staff of the Department. They gather media experts, media historians, researchers involved in information technology and research in the field of economics and media management. Participants of the Conference present the results of their research thematically related to technologies, monetization, electronic media and BigData analysis.
The Department of Information Technology of Media, apart from didactics, deals with an innovative media research area. The subject of interest is the latest information technologies, which became an integral part of the modern journalist's workshop.

In the Department, a research program of the National Center for Research and Development on the BigData analysis is being implemented. The methodology developed with the help of innovative algorithms enables searching and analyzing information in large data resources. The originality of the results, and especially the possibility of predicting the processes, is of great interest to the research community. Currently, more projects are being prepared with both domestic and foreign partners.

What is the field of our research?
The issues of conducted research concern comparative research of contemporary media systems, media economics, theory and practice of propaganda, transformation of the profession of a journalist, the role of public media, and issues related to international and national media policy. Didactic activity concentrates on organizing didactic classes such as the Polski System Medialny [Polish Media System], Współczesne Modele Systemów Medialnych [Contemporary Models of Media Systems], Media Lokalne i Społecznościowe [Local and Community Media], and Ekonomika Mediów [Media Economics]. For students of the Erasmus program, KSM prepares modules on the subject of "Journalism Culture", "Media and Democracy" and "Comparative Media Systems".
Employees of the Department of Media Systems conduct scientific activities through research projects, publishing activities as well as through the participation and organization of national and international conferences with the participation of media researchers and practitioners. Scientific seminars organized every year aim to draw attention to the media changes that have taken place so far and have concerned convergence issues, changes in the behavior of media users and the impact of new media and technologies on modern media systems. In June 2015, KSM organized an international conference "Public Service Media in the Digital Mediascapes" with representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Broadcasting Union, the National Broadcasting Council and media practitioners from Bulgaria, Austria, Denmark and the United Kingdom.
The Department's employees take part in numerous projects financed from domestic and foreign funds. Currently, two large projects are being conducted: "Kultura organizacyjna mediów publicznych w ekosystemach cyfrowych: ludzie, wartości, procesy" [Organizational culture of public media in digital ecosystems: people, values, processes], which is financed by the National Center of Science (SONATA 8 program) and "L'Europe dans les Medias en ligne" funded by the Fondation de l'Université de Cergy-Pontoise in France.

What is the field of our research?
The Department's staff deal with the analysis of the role of the media (press, radio, television, internet) and interpersonal communication in the development of social systems. The educational classes as well as scientific research concern the theory and practice of creating, transforming and transferring all available information tools between individuals, social groups and organizations appearing both as the sender and the recipient of this information. We are also interested in the effect of this communication, or: how the recipient reacts to the received message and what means of persuasion or manipulation were used in the media message. The research interests of the Department's employees are focused on issues such as the coverage and significance of communication levels in contemporary society, the role of media in political communication, the impact of media on different audiences, professionalization of communication between various social organizations, government institutions and NGOs, the presence and impact of propaganda tools, changes in the nature of the impact of advertising on selected social groups, the use of new media (including the Internet, social media, mobile apps, etc.) in social communication, processes that shape the contemporary media information. For several years, the employees of the Department have been paying a lot of attention to the role of public relations specialists in shaping public opinion and their impact on the functioning of the media and the activities of companies and social institutions. In the teaching and research classes, we assume that public relations should be treated as a form of social communication in a democratic country in which the principles of free flow of information and the free media market function. In our research, we deal with the evolution of social perception of the profession of journalist and PR consultant, controversies and disputes in public relations around the ethics of this profession and social expectations in the context of corporate social responsibility, information campaigns and measuring their effectiveness, managing organizational communication and prevention logistics as well as mitigating the situation crisis. As part of media market research, we deal with various methods of promoting entities of this market, rules of regulation and conduct ethics, analysis of audience measurement results, readership, radio audience surveys, the popularity of websites, market trends research and their impact on the shape and structure of the media industry.

Co badamy?

W centrum zainteresowań naukowo-badawczych i dydaktycznych Katedry Badań nad Instytucjami Kultury są biblioteki, archiwa, muzea, galerie i ośrodki kultury - instytucje dziedzictwa kulturowego. Zawsze odgrywały one istotną rolę jako ośrodki o charakterze kulturotwórczym, edukacyjnym, społecznym i rekreacyjnym. Instytucje kultury poprzez gromadzenie, archiwizowanie, prezentowanie, zapewnianie dostępu, popularyzowanie, informowanie o dziedzictwie kulturowym, wspieranie kształcenia, zapewnianie dostępu do różnorodnych informacji, działalności rekreacyjnej itp. służą budowaniu świadomości tożsamości narodowej i małoojczyźnianej, z uwzględnieniem celów stawianych edukacji i kulturze w obszarze nowoczesnej Europy.

  • z zarządzaniem bibliotekami oraz innymi instytucjami kultury, zapewnianiem ich prawidłowej organizacji i funkcjonowania: pozyskiwania środków finansowych, ukazywaniu aktualnych tendencji w zakresie organizacji tych instytucji i prowadzonej pracy bibliotecznej, archiwalnej, muzealnej, wystawienniczej;
  • z identyfikacją grup odbiorców i ich potrzeb oraz dążeniem do ich zaspokajania;
  • z identyfikacją zasobów dziedzictwa kulturowego, umiejętnością ich gromadzenia, opracowania, archiwizowania,  przechowywania, udostępniania, informowania o nich i ochrony informacji, tak w sposób tradycyjny jak i z wykorzystaniem nowych technologii informacyjnych;
  • z kompetencjami niezbędnymi do efektywnej pracy w instytucjach kultury: twórczą komunikacją, umiejętnościami w zakresie aktywizacji kulturalnej, form pracy z różnymi grupami użytkowników,  psychologii zachowań;
